Super impressive, both of you.

Has me wondering how I'd have gone about this. I'd likely have resorted to Python to do it, I think. Very impressed by the Excel methods.

edit: so I just had a quick play, and the barebones of it is quite easy in Python. The tricky parts would be grouping parts to maintain grammar etc, as you and Mitchell note:

import random

sentence = 'the reason was that in the twin states of entire darkness and semi-somnambulance I was facing in a different direction'

words = sentence.split()

random.shuffle(words)

new_sentence = ' '.join(words)

output:

facing and the states darkness reason I twin a that the was entire in direction different was in of semi-somnambulance

Brilliant. Thanks for this contribution, Nathan. I think I will depaywall this post so that others can see the great ideas you and @mitch had

Heh, yeah, the bowels of that is where my understanding stops 😅

Crazy people with too much spare time on your hands. Honorary AIs! But a couple of interesting approaches. Just like AIs, I’m not too impressed with the output, but such is life. I’d far rather read what humans write. Thanks for the ‘food for thought’ anyway. 🤗🤗👍

What do you think of the idea that AI can give us a head start?

For me, definitely no, but it's such a complex and grey area. (When authors see chunks of their writing in AI-developed pieces modified by other authors???) The techniques by which writing AIs 'learn' to write still feels decidedly dodgy to me.

Same with 'art' 'developed' by an AI (much more my field of interest) - you can see blocks of other work put together. If that's used as a starting point for an artist... I can understand using things to inspire creativity, but while ever any of the AI-engineered data remains unedited, it is still potentially 'theft'??

There's no easy answer to any of it, but I think a lot more careful thought is required. We all have different areas of expertise and as an ex-programmer AND an artist, I can see conflicts of interest and concerns over ethics (as well as an understanding about just how these things CAN potentially 'learn' and what directions their 'thoughts' could lead!!!!)

An incredibly complex area.

I agree, although I feel a bit hypocritical because I use AI for illustrations sometimes. 😟
