What mayhem! That's too bad about your old number. I feel your pain on that one. I had the same phone number for many years. Then I moved and the same phone company wasn't available at this next house, even though it was only less than 2 miles down the road. I couldn't take the number with me. They said it would take at least 2 weeks to port over. I didn't have 2 weeks. I needed 1 day. So I lost the number. Then I had to call all the places that had that number and give them the new number. What a hassle.

Sounds awful, Matthew. That's what we're afraid of. I phoned the bank on Saturday and had to spend ten minutes explaining why the number I was phoning from wasn't the one that listed on their system for us. So I suppose that's a big problem: not knowing all the people to tell! Back to your experience, I don't understand why things can't be done in a day. I somehow cannot imagine King Chas or Biden waiting for two weeks.

I hope you get yours sorted out. Just think of, as you said the bank, then: doctors, dentists, electric, gas, family, those who are your emergency contacts, schools, etc. I know all those won't pertain to you but it adds up when you think about it.

As for my problem, I was with AT&T. The place I was moving to had a contract with Dish Network. You had no choice. I didn't know this until a few days before the move. The realtor that was responsible for renting us the townhome didn't even know. She asked me if I ever got it figured out. She wasn't too smart. In fact, I probably could write something about the whole experience. I had phone, Internet, and television with 3 different providers. So I had cancel all those and then go with their Dish.

Thanks for the memory jog, Matthew. We should know by tomorrow or Tuesday whether we will get our old number back. As for your story, I think you SHOULD write it. It would be cathartic at the very least! One thing about all this is that in some respects having different providers can be a good idea, although obviously there are downsides. How has your experience with Dish been?

I think I will write about it because since I wrote this I've thought about a lot of things that happened to me at that townhome. I was only at that place for 1 1/2 years because the landlord announced out of the blue that he was selling the place. I can tell you while I was there, Dish was okay except for the tv service. No problems with Internet or phone. But television service was a problem. There were constant outages. They had a notice that their service would go out during storms. There was no satellite dish attached to the townhomes so I don't know how they got the service. But it went out when it was nice and sunny outside. I was constantly on the line with support trying to work out the problems. I think they knew my name by heart I called so many times.

I've been at my current place for 5 years. When I moved, I couldn't take the new number with me so I had to get another number. So I have lived in the same county in Florida for 40 years and had 4 phone numbers. Go figure.

I'm currently on Charter Spectrum with all three services now: phone,Internet, TV. We have issues with the television on occasion. I have to re-boot the box. That usually fixes it. If not, I'm on with support again.

Gosh, I don't know how you cope. I'm surprised you haven't just thrown in the towel and opted for cell phone only. (One of my cousins has done that.) You should definitely write about it because having all different providers in different parts of the country is a bit alien to us Brits. I suppose Scotland might be different from England, ditto Wales and NI, but as far as I know within a country providers are national, although coverage is better in some areas by some providers than in others.
