Borges puts a new spin on the theme of the ghostwriter in a short story. In Douglas Adams' words: "You should read Jorge Luis Borges’ short story ‘Pierre Menard, Author of Don Quixote.’ It’s only six pages long, and you’ll be wanting to drop me a postcard to thank me for pointing it out to you."

I confess my mind is not fit to understand it but, here you are...

Thanks, Rafael. Actually one of my favourites. I saw it as a real send up of academia, literary criticism in particular. Thanks for the link: I shall read it again

Another excellent column!

I am reminded of the time in college when I announced to two of my friends, “Someday, someone will make a movie about Charlie Parker, and I will be in it.”

It was thirteen years later, and I was only an extra, but I’m in two scenes of Clint Eastwood’s “Bird.”

Wow, the Tom Petty + friends video is so good. Wow. Who's the fellow next to Jeff Lynne? So good. I don't remember Prince knocking something out of the part like that. Wow. Such a good listen. Minty and Willow look regal, btw. The Make Me Smile video made me smile. I didn't know that song. The musicians look so polite. I also love how still they stand while performing. The solo acoustic bit was great. Indeed, a very great start to the week.

Bloke next to Lynne: ain't got a clue mate. I've looked on Google and none of the sites seem to say who he is.

Minty is a princess, or thinks she is.

Apparently Prince's solo was unrehearsed, though I imagine he must have arranged with someone to catch him! Will post a video about that next week if I can find it again.

Lovely start to the week, Terry. I enjoyed everything about it (if you don't count the Steve Harley song. Really, was that a popular tune?) We experienced the tethered bottle caps in Italy last spring. After I tore the caps off the first three or four, my wife explained that they were supposed to remain attached so as to avoid littering. We have many selfies of our trip where I sport a dark dribble line down the front of my shirt. Never quite got the hang of it. Have a great week sir Terry.

Thanks, Jim.

Steve Harley: it was popular in Britain, I suppose cos he was English. I quite like the tune, and the words, but I can understand why it might not be universally popular!

re the tethered bottle top. My understanding is that it's a relatively new EU rule that we're following even though we left the EU. I'm sure if people had known about the plato introduce the tethered top even more people would have voted for Brexit.

Thanks, Jim, you too.

Especially love Minty and Willow---as you say, awww. how cute! (Our Daisy said she would like to have a playdate with them.) But really they are lovely--thanks for the photo!

LOL. Minty is my girlfriend, and Willow is my brother. They LOOK sweet and cute, I'll grant you that, but looks can be deceptive. Mintry is eating us into insolvency, and Willow demands to be chased and cuddled all the time.

Now that is a LOT of entertainment for a Monday morning. With the added bonus, I got to postpone the sweeping and dish-washing for an extra half hour! Win-win! Thank you, your honorable-ness

Yes. A man is always wrong. Ask my wife. She hates those tethered bottle tops as well. I suppose not wanting to lose the top makes sense, but the design is poor. Ambition over intelligence but the next lightbulb moment will fix that. I hate that phrase think outside the box as I'm one of those smart alecs who try not to see a box in the first place, but as a rule of thumb it's worth hammering into the youth who can't see much beyond tick tock no matter how much you try. (I am thinking of my grandkids here and their terrible schools. I don't know if they're all like that in Essex or it's just where they live)

ask wife: LOL. I don't know anything about the schools in Essex except that is (or was) the largest LA in England as measured by the number of schools in it.

Sherlock ! A face that's just as recognizable as Superman, Batman, Mother Teresa, Captain Kangaroo, Captain Kirk, Sgt. Preston of the Yukon, Lara Croft, Robin Williams, Gautama Buddha, Lao Tsu & Genghis Khan..... Oh, & WILSON, Tom Hanks' costar in CAST AWAY.

Wilson deserved the oscar just for that tragic demise scene

Anyone notice that, besides the brand name of the ball, Wilson is also the name of Tom Hanks’ wife? I’m just asking questions here…

I was not overly impressed with that entire movie for some reason. & people FORGET that Tom Hanks cut his teeth in movies such as " BIG ", " Splash ! ", similar then went to drama.

I once took a group of sixth graders to an amusement park. When we walked up to the roller coaster one of the boys told me he was scared because it was so high. I got the others on the roller coaster and sat with the boy. When I got everyone on the coaster, I told them to be to be nice to their classmate because everyone has been scared of something. He got over his fear of heights because now he flies 747 cargo planes all over the world. You never know.
