Missed this one last week, Terry! A relief to hear that both you and Minty made it back into the house alive!!

And oh my, those words by Mussolini...!

Thanks Nathan. Mussolini writing: a bit too ornate methinks!

Next time, save your life. Cats can be replaced, people can't. I know what you mean by fast cars. The speed limit in my condo complex is 10 mph. Cars regularly go by at 30 mph and I saw one go by that was going at least 60 mph. In fact, this morning when I was walking across the crosswalk coming back from getting the mail, a pickup truck came barrelling around the corner and had to slow down for me. I can't tell you how many times I've almost been run over.

I like your painting, very abstract. You might not think it looks good but I do.

Pretty soon, you're going to have to give us a sax demo. You keep building us up and you're going to have to do it.

Thanks, Matthew.

1. It was largely instinctive, but also in the nano second in which I had the decision to make, I figured the van driver would be more likely to brake to avoid killing me than he would in the case of a cat. A few years ago a neighbour had a cat who was old, probably suffereing from dementia (they can do, you know) and was always curled up in a ball in the middle of the road. One day a car deliberately drove over her (the driver could easily have honked, slowed down, stopped and picked her up or simply go around her). The cat was harmless, docile, and just a very happy bundle of fur. There are some truly nasty people around. So if the situation I described in the article were to arise again (which it will), I would act in exactly the same way.

2. Sorry to hear that you were nearly run over. On some of the roads around here they put speed bumps in. The slow down the traffici a bit but increase pollution.

3. Thanks re painting.

4. Every time I've tried to record a sax demo for the enjoyment (I use the word advisedly) of my readers, I fluff it. Same thing happens in the sax calsss I attend. Last week I hit the wrong note. The tutor said at the end "Nice, well played". I said that it was much better when I did it at home, and he replied "Always"

There are speed bumps in my condo complex but it doesn't seem to matter. They still run over them without stopping. Some day they might learn that doing that is not good for their car. I once visited an apartment complex while looking for a place to live and they had the perfect speed bumps. They had two placed across the road and then another one placed behind the two overlapping each. They were pretty high up in the air. No one could ever go fast or they would wreck their car. I wish we had those here. It would solve the problem instantly.

An alarming start to your 'Start the week', Terry - I'm glad that you and Minty escaped unscathed! How absolutely terrifying.

The extract of Macbeth is terrific. In fact, as you've got the salient parts of the storyline across in just those few concise lines, why not take just that bit on national tour? I mean, it stands alone as it is - but in case you don't want to disappoint any audience members wanting a longer show, take your sax.

Great links, as always. And what a coincidence that you'd chosen that song to share - I heard it in a café last week when I was out with my mum, and she asked me why I was laughing. I told her that for YEARS I'd thought that the words repeated so many times in the chorus had been 'Go and get st*ffed'! She nearly spat out her coffee!

I love the saxophonist art. Great work!

Thanks, Rebecca. I've reworked the ending of my Macbeth extract. National tour? Ilike the way you think. Go and get stuffed: 🤣 Thanks for kind words :-)

Oi! MY spelling of it included a substituted asterisk out of consideration to your audience!

Expand full comment

My audience don't need asterisks, but thanks anyway. Two women have already misread "sax" as "sex", and that's just the ones who've admitted it. It's people like that (and you, asterisks or no asterisks) who bring my high-brow publication into disrepute.

I am shocked by your assessment of your audience, Terry - perhaps we DO need asterisks to preserve our delicate sensibilities!

Highbrow....? 👀😉🤭

Oi! Are you questioning the high browness of my newsletter?

There's a good deal of toxic femininity in Macbeth, too (at least that's come across as I've been teaching to my all-girls English class). She emasculates him from the moment he starts to waver - and continues to do so at various points until the end. And it works, too. He does exactly as he's told.

Glad the cat made it! One of our dogs got loose while walking around the centre of Carlisle this summer and that was a heart-stopping moment.

I agree.. I said this here: https://open.substack.com/pub/terryfreedman/p/start-the-week-54?r=18suih&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

Out of interest, what was your (female) students' views?

Thanks 're cat😀

Imagine my horror as I misread the title as "sex links"...🫣 But I persevered, out of loyalty, glad I did.

Love the artworks, glad you and Minty made it, dangerous world we inhabit...

I initially skimmed over "embracing Transformation, Musicality & Expression" and first thought "musicality" was "masculinity" as I had just read the words "toxic masculinity" and thought you were carrying on a theme. Then I thought, wait, is it "muscularity?". No, wait, it can't be. Ah, it's "musicality"! That makes much more sense. 😄 Love Billy Ocean, by the way. Always great to read your posts. And I LOVE the painting! Very, very cool. And so glad Minty (and you) are doing well. Scary stuff for cat and cat owner.

I love the video! 1986! A great year. Michael Douglas, Danny DeVito and Kathleen Turner were rockin' it!

I am glad that both Minty and you are all right.

'When I am given a costume romance beginning, "From the tiny churches hidden within the newly budding verdure of the valleys, the evensong of the Ave Maria floated gently forth and died upon the lake”, my only wish is that I, too, might float gently forth and die, and I'm not particular whether it's upon the lake or on dry land.'

Have you read Jo Nesbo’s Macbeth? It’s excellent. The witches are cooking meth, and it gets better from there.

Expand full comment

LOL. No I haven't! I think I've heard of it though. I must look it up. I saw a odern dress production at The Globe recently, and the witches were middle-aged men spreeading fake news, and using a blender to make their concoctions!
