How cool that the Beigel Bake hasn't updated its sign since before 1995, which is when the 071 phone code became 0171! And of course since 2000 the 0171 phone code has been 020 7.... 🤣 I love things like that. 😁
'This is a vegan café'! Oooopsy daisy, Terry!
I like the sound of your blogging course - and I know I've had a brief e-mail discussion with you about it. Funnily enough City Lit has very kindly sent me a 10% off voucher for my birthday, valid for 'any course priced above £99'. 🤣
Thank you for the super reminder about Jill's superb Macbeth review - I'm going to read it again, and know I'll be laughing for many hours afterwards. Jill, I don't know how you weave your posts together so absolutely beautifully, but I always enjoy them immensely!
My course is only £69 I think -- a bargain! Thanks for plugging the url. Discount: presumably they've offered you the senior citizens' rate?
NOTHING has been updated in the Beigel Bake, including most of the people. They do, however, now accept card payments, whereas pre-covid it was cash only. They also seem a bit more friendly, which is disconcerting tbh
Great post, Terry. Brick Lane sounds like a very cool place, similar to the Brooklyn NY neighborhoods that I am familiar with, with all the eclectic shops and restaurants. I do however, find it hard to believe that I would find a proper bagel there but I'm always open to new interpretations!
Thanks Jim. It is. In fact I was thinking of doing a follow-up because I missed out a few great bits. I've never been to NY, would love to go one of these days
Man, I wish I'd checked with you before I was in London a few weeks ago. I went to a few bookstores in and on the way to Cecil Court but was a little disappointed to be honest.
Oh such a shame, Charlie. Cecil Court is ok for antique books. The only potentially good shop there in my opinion is Watkins, if you're interested in religious books and esoteric literature. Next time you've in London visit Any Amount of Books, a used book store literally three minutes from Cecil Court.I will be writing about that soon.
Another good read. Some very cool links in here. The fraud one (and its comments) is heartbreaking. Some political analogies come to mind - those being defrauded always want to trust as it’s too terrifying to think about the alternative. Sigh. Thanks Terry. 🤗🤗
Thank you for the mention Terry 🙏 also really enjoyed this little gem in your linked piece: “I was slightly under the weather last week. I think I had a bit of a cold. I had to take Lemsip, and then when that didn't work I had to create my own concoction with seventeen organic ingredients. Become a paid subscriber now and I'll share the recipe with you. But enough about me! Let me tell you about my projects.”
I want to visit Brick Lane. I also want to know what's in the pavement, that violin-looking thing you took a photo of. I want to know how many of those are in the pavement, their origins, etc. The photo of the Huguenots' chapel was interesting, too, as some of my Dutch ancestors were Huguenots and almost all of my many, many female aunties and cousins (present company included), have/wear a Huguenot cross round our collective necks. Loved this.
I loved reading this about Brick Lane, thank you Terry. I can imagine it was a tad unnerving to have 20 officers hop out of their van and go swarming in...to order bagels! Great story.
You know, I don't think I've ever been to Brick Lane. I just went and had a look on Google Maps as to where exactly it is in London and then I saw I'd starred a restaurant in Shoreditch where I met some friends when we were passing through on holiday last July. I got the train from Shoreditch that evening, so I was very very close. Alas, no 24/7 beigals for me that day. If only I'd known.
Is GF Day the reason the NFL game was played yesterday in Germany, not in the UK?
At one point the game's announcer said, "Wow, this is quite a sight, 80,000 Germans standing and yelling at the top of their lungs." I admit to feeling an atavistic twinge.
So much cool stuff here, Terry. I can only assume you have a couple of Freedman clones writing some of this? Either that or you have managed to somehow arrange for more than 24 hours in a day. I am going to write a mini story for 🍁 on your very evocative photo of Brick Lane at Night.... if you approve, that is.
I invented a time machine. It means I can write an article, then go back a few hours and write another one. Seriously though, I do a lot of writing in my head while shopping or travelling, and then sort of copy it into the computer!
Most informative post, thank you Terry; I read quickly and thought the sign indicated "Beige Bagels", which I then couldn't unread, visualising cinnamon heavy treats. Three persiflage today, yay!
LOL Funnily enough there's another bagel/beigel shop next door that sells rainbow ones and I think cinnamon etc. I've never tried them because the look of them puts me off!
Loved this post!

Thanks for nice words
Senior citizens' rate? 😡
You can go off people, that's all I can say.... 😉
🕶️ I was merely referencing your recent SaTurday post.
🤣 I know - and thank you so much for linking to it! 😊
#stillfriends
🤣
Yes I love the Brick Lane Bookshop too!!!
Really? Small world! 😃
I used to live round the corner from there...
Really? I bet that was amazing
Yes it was.
😁

Any *Amount* of Books? Number, surely....? 🫣
I'll get my coat.... 😉
You need to tell the owner!
I'll make a note to remember to do that if I ever get to visit, Terry!
😁

I agree, not being able to trust makes one kind of foundation -less. Thanks Beth

Howling. 👏
😂 Thanks Jill 😁

Thanks Mary. I think there is only one violin in the pavement. Interesting to learn of the connection with your forebears!

Lol "swarming" 😂 Thanks Donna. Yes it was!

Another great start to the week, Terry. Thanks.
Such a shame we didn't meet up. Shoreditch station is maybe a seven minute walk from brick lane!
Can I join the party, and meet you both for a beigel and a bookish browse of Brick Lane? 🥯📚
By last July, I meant July 2022 😅 i hadn't heard of Substack back then.
Next time, next time 😊
Ah ok!😂
Thanks Terry for another interesting post.

😂 Thanks David. I don't know! It's a thought 🤔
Guido Fawkes?
Ha ha!
Oh yes, I'd forgotten that! There is a political blog called Guido fawkes: https://order-order.com/
I also didn't know he went by Guido.
See my reply to Olga!

Of course, Sharron, am flattered. Will respond to rest soon but I am on washing up duty. Sigh
Washing up duty? Can't you put the cats to work?
What do you think I use for DRYING the dishes?
🤣
Yaay! Thanks, my friend. Full credit and shout out, of course.
😎
Are beigels the same as bagels? Even spell check underlined your Brit spelling. Hehehe.
I love a good discount too. Next time mention you’re a senior. See if they buy it.
Yes, theoretically. I think original beigels are less doughy. Senior??😱 I identify as a 25 year old thanks
ha ha ha. But does anyone else identify you as 25 years old?
🤣
Sadly not
Young people think anyone over 40 is a senior. Try it out. 😃
That is SO true, Ms Steefel.
😂
Hmm, ok. I'll let u know how I get on 😂
