I liked the bike ride Terry. Looks like she was outpacing you there for a minute. It looks terrifying to ride with all that traffic and those people. I don't live in an area where there are so many people walking across the street.

🤣 RE: Inside Freedman Towers #3

Sometimes I wonder how you read all of the books you're required to read. And still have time to write and reply to all of us.

She does sometimes outpace me because she has a 1986 steel bike, which has more momentum than my modern aluminium one. The traffic is well-behaved around that area. The most dangerous people are pedestrians and other cyclists. I can read fast but \I also read a bit of one book, then a bit of another one etc, then come back to the first one, etc! Thanks for commenting Matthew

A super start to the week, Terry! I enjoyed the latest episode of 'Inside Freedman Towers' - and the story about you and your father-in-law was a hoot!

You're so brave to cycle in the city like that! I was having kittens just watching it... 🫣

Is the lightbulb missing from your bedside light? Your night vision must be incredible if you've got all that reading on the go and nothing to see by! 🤣

(Nice pirate ship, btw! 🏴‍☠️)

😊😊😊

My father-in-law and I used to have a good laugh. My mother -in-law and I would often be doubled up with laughter.

That part of the city isn't too bad. In fact the most dangerous people are the cyclists who jump the lights. 🚴

There's another light.

Yay to pirate ship!😁

Your bedside table reminded me of mine. Recently I decided that the large pile of unread books was a negative reminder of how behind I am on my "book" reading because I am spending large amounts of time on Substack. I chose a few books that could stay, and put the others out of sight. And I did manage to pick up one of the books last week and begin reading it. Aww, but after a few days I'm back to reading my Substack buddies. 💜

Thanks, Sue. I see my pile as a positive one: a vindication of how I aspire to be a Renaissance Man in the 21st century!

Chortles galore, but I still have no theory on the Jason Fox review. Something to do with pyramids? Fox as the symbol for the goddess Isis? Fox as in "Sly Fox?" I got nuthin here.

Thoughts on your hints:

Supposed structure of the book/series: One a week. 52 a year. That's 2.26 years for 118 novels so far.

The novel is only 43 pages long. "Structurally, the novel is sound." Can we take that to be literally that the novel is made of sound, not words? Crimson coloured fish was already noted by Rebecca as being a potential red-herring.

The run-on of "Jason Fox, moulded" makes me think "Fox Mulder" from the The X-Files.

"I never had a plot in the first place." If Jason Fox is an actual Fox, then this might mean that he never had "a plot of land to call his own". 😅😅

My making it to here at The Start of the Week has nothing to do with the fact that you included in my in this post. It is entirely because on this particular Monday I am feeling highly organised...

Urgent is such a good track. Great to see the live video. I often forget to look up live performances of songs that I like.

Hints hints hints ... now then, let's see ...

I love the bedside table photo! Great idea to give us a peek into your world. (Please do not share a photo of your toilet-side table.)

I don’t think I realized you taught secondary students. Kudos to you!

Thanks, Holly. Have no fear: I don't even know what a toilet table is. Yes, a lot of my career in schools was teaching difficult kids, and in deprived areas. On the whole I enjoyed it immensely.

We could use a Terry Freedman in our school system here. More and more teachers are quitting because the kids are difficult, the pay is laughable, and the administration and teachers don't get along.

Oh thanks for kind comments, Holly. It's the same in England. I loved being with the kids, but the system is broken I think.

Agreed. I think "school as we know it" is changing--and will have to change drastically in order for our young people to be educated. I have no answers. I just hope the future is not Ready Player One.

Great live video of Foreigner from a baker's dozen years ago! I know you know that the great Junior Walker provided the original tenor sax solo on the band's '81 hit recording! Keep practicing, Terry!

Thanks Brad. Actually I didn't know! Will have to go back and listen 🎶 🎷 I will. I can play 4 notes, though after ten minutes it all goes to mush. I'm looking for a band that requires a sax solo of just four notes for a maximum of ten minutes

Looking for a band that requires a 4-note solo? You might try the Ricky Ricardo Orchestra....Lucy, apparently, just failed HER sax audition with her rendition of "Glow Worm"! Ricky's a tough judge of talent, though. Good luck!:

I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of traffic on your cycle ride. But I was unimpressed with the Deliveroo rider....

I am also impressed by your bedside reading pile. Where do you put your cup of tea? Biscuits? Sundry headache pills? Pencil and paper for bright ideas?

Expand full comment
author

Lack of traffic was due to time of day, i e not rush hour, and congestion charge. I think those delivery cyclists must be on impossible deadlines.

I clear a space for tea. There's a notebook there somewhere. Pen has to be hidden otherwise cats get it. No headache pills 💊. No biscuits cos of crumbs plus keeping sugar input down 🙄

Expand full comment

The zen story that included tea was the best! Also, I almost got fooled by Nathan’s book review and wanted to ask you for a copy.

You like teaching secondary school kids! And you have this extraordinary sense of humor. That’s why I was surprised by your essay on solitude.

Extraordinary? You mean I'm bonkers, right? I've met your sort before. Regarding surprise, According to a book by Dorothy Rowe in an outgoing introvert. It sounds like a contradiction in terms but she classifies introverts/extrovert by things like what energises people. For introverts, being alone is what recharges the batteries 😁
