Great selection, appreciated seeing and scrolling through these.
I never bothered with the Tom Cruise WotW, but I have memories of watching (and being scared of) the 1953 film when I was young. Must have been in the late 80s, I think.
Happy new year, Terry! Thank you for this fascinating post - I haven't settled down to listen yet, but I'm looking forward to sampling these generous gifts for my ears. Brilliant!
Will we be going back in time at your writing workshop? A true reflection on literature? Hehe. Just a typo I'm sure. We have to make that 2024 adjustment.
[A quick edit - this is a new post, your next course will be June 2024 not June 2023]
Our interpretations of ‘original version’ varies. The thought ‘I thought Paganini was from an earlier time period’ did cross my mind. The fellow that was playing that ‘original version’ is an EXTREMELY talented violinist! (I tried the violin for a couple of years at school (unfortunately for those who knew me).)
I’ll have to check out the YouTube versions for credits.
But yes, every clip was absolutely mesmerising. The 1953 version of War of the Worlds cut out for me just as it got ‘interesting’. Shudder. Lucky me. Sometimes poor internet is a blessing. Thankfully I didn’t have to listen to the whole musical version as I recall it from years past. Extraordinary stuff.
And the disco!! And the AC/DC version!! Another amazingly talented fellow. In a whole different way.
Oh! And Happy New Year! You’re my first Substack post of 2024. Well worth it. Thanks so much dear Terry. All the best for you, your loved ones and your readers for the year ahead. 🤗🤗
Thanks, Beth. Thanks for pointing out the date error. Funnily enough, I had been thinking that I'm unlikely to make the mistake I used to make in the days of writing cheques, of accidententally rendering them a year out of date straight away. And tghen I did that! All corrected now.
Paganini: well, I meant the oiginal tune and arrangement, not the original player 😂😂
I liked the AC/DC version too!
First Substack? I'm flattered. Always best to start with the best methinks 😂
Great fun, Terry! Thanks for putting it together. Man! Those sci-fi special effects were amazing for 1953, weren't they! I wish you a joyful and creatively satisfying year, old man. I look forward to hearing what sorts of eclectic persiflage comes next.
Oh.... how do I pick my favorite variation? This was great, Terry. I love the ACDC version of Funky town running parallel to András Schiff playing Bach’s Goildberg Variations just because they're so different AND wonderful. This post encourages me to make art with variations, swerving from the tried and true to "why not"? Happy New Year's Eve to you, too!
Belated Happy New Year!

I thought the Cruise one was too focused on Cruise being handsome. The '53 one was better acted, great effects, and, yes, scary

Wonderful music selection.
Happy New Year! It’s already 2024 on your isle!
🎊🎆🎈
Thanks, Carissa. Time travel is incluided in the price 😂 Happy new year to you too!
Aaaah Terry, the deeps you rise to for our benefit. With thanks, Peace, Maurice
Thanks, Maurice. Peace to you as well :-)
An extraordinary music collection, Terry. Thank you.
Happy new year and a bigger thank you for what your posts bring to me on a regular basis. It's been not just fun but educational as well. Cheers.

They were brilliant. They also kept pretty close to the original story, apart from relocating it in the USA!
