The frankness of ChatGTP in this admission does it credit: 'I'm sorry, but I'm a text-based AI and cannot create visual drawings or images.' 🤣 (A great reminder to those of us in the world at large to recognise our limitations. 😉)
'The sterile corridors of salvation'? I'm afraid my last visit to a hospital didn't give me that impression. And I'm not sure that the graphics quite bring across that point, either - I'm rather worried about the Daliesque clock and the broken hospital window. 🤣
Such an enjoyable post, Terry. I'm in constant awe of your Experiments in style project! 🙌
You've obviously been going to the wrong hospital, Rebecca. My local hospital is indeed full of ""The sterile corridors of salvation.", although it's disconcerting that a ward labelled Departure Lounge is right next door the mortuary (I'm not kidding). I find it worrying that the nurse is attending to his head wound while he is still wearing his trench coat. In my local hospital they make you take off your clothes, give you a gown that gapes wide open at the back, and take blood samples and your temperature -- and that's just for visitors! It's even worse if you go in with an injury.
When I worked at an old hospital, they had a Waiting Room next to the Mortuary. It took me quite some time to realise that it’s function wasn’t quite what I visualised...
Thanks very much. "Gritty charm": indeed! Regarding "A disheveled man, wearing a trench coat and fedora, slowly emerges from his unkempt bed, rubbing his eyes", it is clear that in this hardboiled film noir setting, the protagonist of the story sleeps in a trench coat and wears a hat in bed in case he is called out in the middle of the night. It seems fairly reasonable to me 🤣
A brave attempt, Terry. I have questions: How long did this take you? What do YOU think of the results vs time spent? How does it feel, as a professional writer, to see a machine's create for you? Will you try it again?
Thanks, Sharron. 1. My original effort probably took around half an hour. 2. I've tried doing it manually but my drawing skills don't stretch to comic strips unfortunately, so I gave up, so I think it was a good investment of time to an extent. I actually don't like either result tbh because neither of them meet the comic strip of my imagination. 3. I've tested ChatGPT on various tasks, and at the risk of sounding big-headed I don't think it writes as well as I do. If the editor of one of the magazine's I write for gave me the boot on the grounds that they could use AI instead of me, I would expect to see a decline in their sales as the quality of the articles decreases (because I wouldn't be the only casualty). So I wouldn't want to work for a failing brand anyway.
As it happens, regarding that last statement, I stopped working for one particular magazine some years ago because it really started to go downhill, and I didn't want to be associated with it. There was another magazine I didn't even pitch for the same reason.
However, I do think there should be a mechanism whereby the people whose work has contributed to AI should be compensated in some way, because at the moment it feels like the content creators, of whom I am one, are being ripped off.
I didn't think of asking for a panel at a time. That seems like a good idea, Mitch, thanks! I subscribe to Paul's newsletter but that section hadn't registered. I see what you mean. It looks pretty sumptuous, and the change in characters' characteristics doesn't seem to get in the way.
Bahahaha, oh how I love AI art sometimes. Those are awesome. I'm going to play with the same prompt and see what I get too 😅
Great! I look forward to seeing them. Thanks, Nathan
I’m actually very impressed by the first Chat’s response!!! The follow up images less so. Another fun experiment. Thanks Senor Terry.
Agreed! 😁
Terry, this is absolutely extraordinary!

Oh gosh, Beth!
😂
LOL 🤣
This had a certain gritty charm for AI. Not sure what to make of the fact that your character sleeps in his trench coat and fedora, though... ;-)

I liked the first one better, but you should have included a cat.
Well I would have, but all of those images were copied and pasted from a clipart library within the program. Not sure if there was a cat pic!
YES!!!!!
😂

Oooooh, such great questions, Sharron - I'm looking forward to Terry's answers! 😊
I got ChatGPT to reply to Sharron. This was written by ChatGPT as well. In fact, the original post was written by ChatGPT. In fact, I myself am a bot.
🤣
