Experiments in style: chromatic version
A colourful account of something that happened
Greetings!
If youโre new here then you can find out all about this project of mine here:
But in a nutshell itโs this: Iโve been taking a short and very bland story and rewriting it in different styles. This time Iโve chosen to do it in a chromatic style. Whatโs that? All will be revealed after this, which is the short story Iโve been working with:
A bang on the head (template)
In the middle of the night, I woke up (if you can call being semi-conscious being awake), walked purposefully towards the door to go to the bathroom โ and almost knocked myself out.
The reason was that in the twin states of entire darkness and semi-somnambulance I was facing in a different direction from the one I thought I was facing. As a result, instead of walking through the door, I tried to walk through the wall.
The next few days brought nausea and headaches. After much prevarication I went to Accident and Emergency, where I waited petrified among people for whom โsocial distancingโ means not quite touching you, and who wore their masks as a chin-warmer.
An hour and a half later I emerged into the twilight, secure in the knowledge that I had nothing more serious than mild concussion. I failed to do much writing, but I was pleased to have read a further 17% of my book.
Chromatic version
No wonder I ended up black and blue. And I go bright red every time I think about it. But this is what happened. In the middle of the black night at the end of a grey day, I woke up (if you can call being semi-conscious being awake), walked purposefully towards the cream-coloured door to go to the white-tiled bathroom โ and almost knocked myself out.
The reason was that in the twin states of entire darkness and semi-somnambulance I was facing in a different direction from the one I thought I was facing. As a result, instead of walking through the cream door, I tried to walk through the magenta wall. I should have switched on the brown bedside lamp and cast a soft yellow glow over the magenta room with yellow curtains and a white ceiling and a cream door.
The next few days brought nausea and headaches, no doubt from the red bump that had appeared on my head. After much prevarication I went to Accident and Emergency, which has green walls and a navy blue entrance with green signs, where I waited petrified among people who were dressed in all different colours, and for whom โsocial distancingโ means not quite touching you, and who wore their masks, some of which had green and red stripes, while mine was white with light blue horizontal stripes with black string, as a chin-warmer.
An hour and a half later I emerged amongst the green trees with brown trunks into the dark blue twilight, secure in the knowledge that I had nothing more serious than mild concussion. I failed to do much writing, but I was pleased to have read a further 17% of my book, โLearning about coloursโ.
Well, what do you think?
In some of my Tuesday posts, for paying subscribers, I go into how I come up with the ideas for these styles and how I go about executing them.
Yo Terry, over the top it sure is, BUT a brilliant experiment with a chuckle. And what a great set of comments generated
Very colorful! ๐คฃ
I'm sitting at my black desk, typing on my black and silver keyboard, while viewing my black monitor. I'm listening to my black speakers with my black headphones. My black table lamp sits on my desk while my black cable modem (something I had no choice in color) sits at the end of my desk. My black router sits on my black filing cabinet. Meanwhile, my black cell phone sits next to me on the desk. Oh, did I mention I have a black mousepad and a black and silver mouse. Oh, there is my black printer. The chair that I sit in is black. I'm noticing a pattern here. ๐คฃ
I do have color in my home office though. The walls are cream and the floor is light tan.
