Those old clips! Such fun to watch, but also, we really live in such a different world now... I'm reminded of the ending of Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, at the auction, when the ghosts muse about the "evaporation" of (High) Society. 👻

I will have to seek that out, Troy, as I'm not familiar with it. Thanks!

Spy still have a few hours to enter, Rebecca!

Ah! I started going through all your stories last week so that I could find which one it was, but then totally forgot to come back to it. Last week was a VERY busy week. Such is life. Enjoy your week.

I thought you had, because you were liking and commenting on old posts. But then you stopped so I assumed you'd given up. 😀

No, just totally forgot. I had every intention of coming back to it. It would have only taken three or four more sessions, but wow it was a busy week. Retirement can feel busier than work life! We had a massive Christmas Party on last Friday and I was volunteer Treasurer for it all. So busy. Plus a heap of other volunteer work. There’s finally light at the end of the tunnel, but some stuff is not going to get done at all this year I suspect. Anyway, that’s me waffling on. 🤪😴 All the best.

My mother in law said that she was so busy once she had retired that she didn't know how she ever had time for work. Anyway, sorry, I should have let the competition run till midnight today, but I totally forgot I'd set that deadline! Do you think you would have cracked it in the next few hours?

Expand full comment

Quite possibly once I’d had the reminder. Just trying to think what time that translates to here. But all good. Has been really busy this morning because everyone’s ringing and texting about Christmas parties and birthday greetings. The good life. Take care Lord Terry. Grin.

Being American, I had to look up the meaning of the British idiom "merry dance", referring to a situation where someone is being misled by another person, causing them to go round and round in circles without making any progress." In the US we would call it being led "on a wild goose chase". Cool. I learned something new.

Our Terry is an expert in the merry dance, Sharron.... I'm sure he takes great pleasure tying us in knots!

Ditto 'leading us up the garden path'. REPEATEDLY..... 🙄🤣🤣

I didn't know that wasn't known in the USA. But I have carefully crafted my post to ensure that anyone rising to the challenge has a fighting chance of making progress!

Okay! I am jumping in again.

excellent! Live dangerously, Sharron!

The Astaire clips ~swoon!~ What a master he was (as were his partners).

I think I've got the 23, but I might noodle them a bit longer to be sure I've not fallen for any Freedman flimflam. 😂

Freedman flimflam???? What are you saying, Elizabeth?

I'm not too well versed on dancing but I will try to TWIST my brain around this.

I don't think Terry's too worried if this one doesn't jive with all folk. I might tap out of the competition and make a quick step to another of his posts instead...

Oh dear, I wish I'd never started this. Chortle

😆

In all seriousness, it's very good Terry. I have said before and I'll say again: you should write more fiction.

Expand full comment

Thanks very much, Nathan, that's especially nice coming from you. I somewhat lack both confidence and imagination as far as fiction is concerned though. Perhaps I should learn to think differently about it.

Expand full comment

You should! The amount of imagination that goes into these variations is always impressive.

Give it a whirl. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

Hmm. Maybe. Thanks, Nathan

<groan>. Very good, Jim 🤣

It helps going in if you know that "a merry dance" refers to " a wild goose chase". ha ha ha

Expand full comment

LOL. I only chose that title because I liked the sound of it and because it appears in one of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (the Miller's Tale, if I recall correctly), thereby demonstrating how erudite I am despite having been brought up on the wrong side of the tracks. But I can assure you it's not a wild goose chase: there really are a load of dances embedded in that article. Seek and you will find. Chortle.

Love the clips. Worth it just for that and I am going back to re-hash and physically write dances down. Thus far I think I have 6, but 23? Holy cow!

Expand full comment

There are definitely 23, or possibly 22 and a half. The clips are brilliant, aren't they?

Expand full comment

How fun is this, Terry? I’ve saved it to play. Marry Christmas to you

Expand full comment

Thanks, Kathleen. Play? I didn't record a voiceover or anything. Happy Christmas to you too!

Guess the dances!

Of course! Sorry. Being a bit dense.
