So this Storehouse...it's a huge warehouse of stuff that may get put on display where? I don't think we have anything like that in Canada. People come and look at the stuff because it's cool stuff or they want to get out of the rain? I am unclear on the concept (not my first time🤣)
Thanks, Donna. Re: Storehouse, this is what Perplexity.ai said:
the objects at the V&A East Storehouse are actively used in exhibitions and elsewhere. Many of the items are available for loan to UK and international museums, galleries, and cultural institutions for exhibitions, supporting both public access and collaborative research. The V&A operates a robust loan program that allows objects from its collections to be sent out for both short-term and long-term exhibitions, provided the borrowing institution meets certain requirements and gives sufficient advance notice (typically 12 months) for loan requests. This enables a large portion of the Storehouse's collections to be seen beyond the site itself, contributing to exhibitions and projects around the world.
Within the Storehouse, collection objects are also continually rotated and highlighted through pop-up displays, creative workshops, performances, and the innovative "Order an Object" program, where visitors can request specific items for close viewing or study. Additionally, as the groupings of objects change frequently due to loans and conservation work, the Storehouse remains a dynamic space rather than a static archive, supporting both access on-site and the active use of items in cultural projects elsewhere
Good to hear you've been kind to yourself and enjoyed something of a break and rest, Terry! Maintain that. (I need to do that, myself. My annual leave is now into the "we will force you off work if you don't take some immediately" level!)
Loved this, Terry - a great hundredth edition of Start the week! And I'm excited to hear the news that the cyber postman might be delivering one of your Letters to Rebecca this week!
Your ovine art is brilliant, although 'Muriel' is OBVIOUSLY Willow in disguise. A cat in sheep's clothing - those sunglasses are a dead giveaway. Nice try, Willow. 😾
I've signed up to your 60-minute writer course!!! Can't wait! I thoroughly enjoyed it last time, and I'm looking forward to its latest iteration. I found I enjoyed the homework just as much as the lessons, and learned sooooooo much during those eleven weeks.
Ovine art: ha, you saw through Willow’s cunning disguise!
You enjoyed the homework? I obviously wasn’t strict enough. Seriously though, I think homeowrk, in the form of pre-reading and post-assignment, is really important. If people have the time to do it they get much more from the course. Thanks for signing up. I have more ideas for the new iteration than I can fit into 11 sessions, which is a good thing really!
Not strict enough? Terry, for those entire 11 weeks of your last course you were commenting on every one of my Substack posts ‘DO YER HOMEWERK 😡’!!!!!!!!!!!
In fact I completely agree - I feel I would have had a very different outcome to my learning experience if I hadn’t done the homework. And heck, I loved it, so that was a bonus. I got a great deal out of the course - not just from great teaching but also the workshopping with other participants, doing the homework and having the opportunity to read the work of others - and comment on it - and receive feedback from other students as well as you - and I can’t wait for the next one!
Is the V and A like a Costco? Discounted goods in bulk? Love the no return/thievery policy. Hehe. Our Costco will take back anything even if it’s been years as long as you have the receipt. But one must keep that receipt.
Hello Andy Warhol photographer. That pic is awesome! I hope Elaine framed it.
Thanks, Carissa. Like Costco? LOL. I didn’t know that Costco took stuff back years later. Mind you, they did replace a computer when it went wrong two days after the warranty ran out.
I told Elaine what you said, about framing the picture, and she replied that she was thinking of putting it on a dartboard. This is what I have to put up with, despite being a famous writer and all-round good guy.
Oh my! 🙈 The least said about that the better! 😂 Thank you for the essay mention. Glad to hear you’re starting to feel better. Yoga retreat sounds good, as does Fran Lebowitz, always! 🤩
Thanks, Claire. Now come on! Surely as a lit crit person you can come up with a better response than “Oh my…better”? LOL
Essay mention: you’re welcome.
Feeling better: thank you.
Yoga retreat: I didn’t go on a yoga retreat as such. I booked myself into a self-catering cottage and did yoga in the privacy of that. I think if I ever DO go on a yoga retreat (I have thought about it), I would choose one where you’re not expected to converse with anyone.
Glad you’re feeling better. My health lately has also made writing difficult (there’s something grammatically wrong with that sentence, but I can’t quite figure out what). Looking forward to coming out the other side. Would that we had ducks and sheep nearby.
Thanks, Cary. Sorry to hear you've not been well. Hope you get better soon. I can't see anything wrong with that sentence either! Ducks and sheep have a definite calming influence to be sure.
You sound MUCH improved, sir, and I am so glad to hear it. (Fish and chips can be a wonderful anodyne, I have found. A prescription from the Divine Physician.... Your art work has DEFINITELY improved - it is much less tentative! Those sheep are quite bold! ( I am thinking of printing them out and framing them to hang alongside Rebecca Holden's strawberry!) And, I LOVE your new photo portrait - you still look a little grumpy but quite handsome. No denying it. Welcome back. Take it slowly.
Thanks, Sharron. I’m thinking of exhibiting my work in a gallery. I wasn’t aware that I had been sounding like I NEEDED improvement. Grumpy? I was in a GOOD mood! LOL
Go Muriel go!
Love all the images.

Thanks Terry, that’s very interesting.
Love that Storehouse. And love fish’n’chips. Nice to see you back. Take care. Never any need to rush things.
Thanks very much, Beth :-)

The V & A Storehouse looks awesome.
Thanks, Nathan, although I am already in the “What rest?” phase.
Regarding forced leave, when I was in charge of a team of people I often had to force them to taek a proper lunch break, so I know what you mean.

😂 Workshopping” as it’s called, in a safe environment, is a great way to make progress
Good to have you back, old boy. I really did enjoy Jennifer and me.
Thanks, old bean! Glad you enjoyed it :-)

So Elaine is funny too? Humor makes for a great marriage.
We hardly ever have a row because sooner or later one of us starts laughing. So frustrating!

persiflage! How dare you steal my favorite word! : )
Ha! It was my favourite first, 😂
