Behind the disco version

Greetings!

My ‘experiments in style’ project has been running now for over a year, so I think it’s time to reflect a bit on it. For those not in the know, I’ve been publishing the same basic story each week, but in a completely different style each time. You can check out the whole range so far right here: Index.

First, though, I’ll dive into detail on the most recent style, which was the Disco version.

But before even that I’d like to say thank you for being a paid subscriber. It’s greatly appreciated, and it enables me to focus on writing here more than I otherwise could. I do hope you find these ‘extra’ posts and ‘behind the scenes/insider posts’ useful.

Anyway, let’s get on with it.

It was very satisfying for me to read the comment by

david roberts
, who publishes the
Sparks from Culture by David Roberts
newsletter:

“I think both versions are true to their respective genres”

The versions that David was referring to were the disco version and the soul version. The reason that I was pleased to read that comment is that it means, I think, that my approach to this sort of thing works. Others chimed in as well. For instance,

just mud
, who writes, er, Just Mud, said that he now has Stayin’ Alive playing in his head,
Mary B
, author of
Thrivin', not Drivin'
said she can hear the disco beat in the background, and puzzle maestro
Mitchell Allen
used an AI app to create a music snippet based on it!

So, what is this ‘magic method’ I use?
