Authority vs Power

The best distinction between authority and power that I’ve seen was in a politics book I bought ages ago. It was something like:

Power: when the people in your team say we have to do X because otherwise we’ll get into trouble.

Authority: when the people in your team say we should do X because that’s what the line manager recommends.
