For some reason, whenever a colleague tried to place a caption beneath the picture instead of above it, Word went berserk. First, it pushed all the subsequent paragraphs onto the next page. So my colleague tried inserting an extra line, which caused the two paragraphs under the caption to disappear altogether. Then he tried to delete a few lines, which caused all the formatting to be lost. In the end he gave up.
